A recent New York Times article made us aware of some shocking data. Today all of the word’s superyachts emit as much emissions as entire small nations! It’s the massive disproportionate per capita emissions that get people agitated. Some call these diesel powered monohull superyachts works of art – and many are, but others see them as the playground and transportation of the “carbon aristocracy”. Maybe this is why more and more are choosing sail driven multihull superyacht which are not only more economical to run and build, but also provide more comfort via silent wind driven propulsion as well as more stability at anchor.

The trend has started. Just take Jeff Bezos’s 416’ wind driven mega ship that has three tall masts. Who knows maybe his next boat will be a sail driven multihull, which is safer, more stable, more efficient and will provide more space for a given length. These examples are leading the way to a more sustainable yachting culture and sailing multihulls are once again at the forefront of this trend.

These notes were inspired by a NY Times International article by Joe Fassler (April 11.2023)
